Ken Garff Road to Success
The goal of the program is to encourage improvement in literacy which will help develop daily and lifelong reading habits, specifically by READING EVERY DAY at least 20 minutes, to improve vocabulary, proficiency, and communication skills.
The Ken Garff Road to Success is a program founded by the Robert H. and Katharine B. Garff Foundation, in collaboration with the Governor's Commission on Literacy, to encourage reading beginning in kindergarten. This statewide program began in 2007 with 50 pilot schools serving approximately 50,000 students. Every school year, each participating school sets a reading goal and informs students and parents of the goal, the incentives, and ways to accomplish the goal. Elementary students are encouraged to READ EVERY DAY. The program provides monthly incentives for the entire student body of each participating school as a gentle reminder to read each day.
Community support is vital to the success of the program. Please join us in helping young readers learn the most valuable skill they can acquire early in their educational experience - help them learn to read!

School Goal: 680 Students x 7 days a week for 32 weeks=152,320 x 50%=76,160 days
Classroom Goal: It is recommended that K-2nd should read 20 minutes, 3rd-4th should read about 40 minutes and 5th-6th should read about 60 minutes per day. This is a decision that you need to make per class/team. Parent Goal: As per your reading requirement, parents/guardians should check off the days the student read or was read to at home. Then, they will total the days per week and initial the end of the week. |
Awards:
1. Whittier Wolf will hang outside one lower grade, one lower grade ELP, one upper grade and one upper grade ELP with the highest number of days read for the month. 2. Tickets will be given to each student based on the number of days read each month. One ticket per week for reading at least 5 out of 7 days and two tickets per week for reading 7 out of 7 days. 3. Drawings will take place 4 times this school year. Students will be given a certificate where they can redeem either a bike, scooter, or Apple Nano from our local Walmart. |
