We carefully analyzed the quote "We have flown the air like birds and swum the sea like fishes, but we have yet to learn the simple act of walking the earth like brothers." by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We heard explanation of our inability as a people to be tolerant of others and their differences.. Do we want to achieve tolerance in this country or acceptance? What's the difference?

We want to achieve both because we want people in our country to be tolerant of people. We also want people in this country to accept other people (doesn't matter the differences) and their abilities. The difference is that if you tolerate someone you may or may not accept who they are you just don't treat them differently. If you accept someone then you accept who they are.

Talk about an essential question! Wow. I agree with Reese. I feel like tolerance is less about embracing differences and more about putting up with differences. I have lots of physical pain. I tolerate it. I put up with it. I don't accept or embrace it because I endeavor to change it. Let's accept others for who they are and tolerate mosquitos, unrestrained dog hair, and traffic.

Hard question! I think we should achieve acceptance because everyone has a flaw. If you just tolerate someone you can't learn about them and then befriend them.If I tolerate someone it means I would just put up with them. If you accept someone that means you take someone for who they are the flaws and the awesome!

I agree with Kellen! You have to take the good with the bad.

We want to achieve both because our country should not decide what other people want. But, under my opinion, I think that we should do acceptance because people are who they are and we should accept people for who they are.

I think acceptance is better because tolerance is a sign of negativity. Acceptance is the exact opposite, it shows that you are looking on the bright side. If you accept something, it's because you understand it. If you just tolerate it, it's because you're just getting through it. Acceptance lasts, tolerance doesn't.
